Did you correctly guess the Shocking Twists and Surprising Backstories from this week’s pair of episodes? I didn’t, but honestly, I’m half-checked out now.

S7:E9 One Little Tear

“Lady Tremaine’s surprising backstory is revealed.”
Airdate: December 8, 2017

• See, she used to be a spy…
• The opening has the floating luminaries from Tangled.
• We assume this is Actual Rapunzel in the carriage and not Disguised Gothel.
• Rapunzel is trapped in a CGI studio!
• She was screaming for Anastasia and Drizella. Another sister? Or something else?
• IvyDrizella with the primo snark: “Orange better on the women in that Netflix show.”
• “This isn’t the first time someone’s tried to lock me up,” says Victoria, as we lead into her Surprising Backstory.
• The building with the ocean mural is familiar to me but I can’t place it.
• Were we going to find out about Roni’s mysterious friend?
• (Dearie)
• WeaverRumple is still hiding his wakefulness. For now.
• Wait what? Victoria is Rapunzel? Okay, that Backstory is actually Surprising.
• Convenient ceiling hook.
• “There is no catch,” says the woman who is most certainly lying.
• I bet Dad has remarried.
• Ouch. Rough.
• “Drizzy”
• “When you left…” She was *kidnapped* bro.
• I wouldn’t have tossed the poisonous mushroom into the fire, myself.
• “There’s always my way.”
• The old fake-fire-alarm-breaking-into-the-evidence-locker trick.
• The Hook!
• No, it’s still an empty panel truck. Not a food truck.
• “Something out of a Tim Burton movie.”
• Looks like Rapunzel tried to cut her wrists at some point.
• Rapunzel is catering her daughter’s birthday party. Difficult.
• Today I realized Lucy is Rumple’s great-granddaughter. Of course, she’s Henry’s daughter, I just hadn’t put it together.
• The Original Book. Wielded by Evil Rapunzel.
• Do you want to build a snowman?
• Let it go?
• Anastasia is the Guardian??

Not that Anastasia.

• It sure looked like Rapunzel disintegrated Gothel.
• Belle is dead, is she not?
• Anastasia awakens and immediately recognizes Victoria Tremaine Belfrey as her mother, though Gabrielle Anwar and Meegan Warner really don’t resemble each other at all.

S7:E10 The Eighth Witch

“Drizella threatens the realm with a dark curse.”
Airdate: December 15, 2017

• More witches!
• Drizella is a Weeping Angel. I believe it.

That which is the image of an Angel becomes an Angel.

• The opening sequence has moved from Seattle to San Francisco. Two days on the Amtrak Coast Starlight.
• You never say that, Tiana! Haven’t you ever seen a movie?
• The quick cuts are disorienting which I’m sure is the point.
• Finally! Who are we here to see? I think that’s the vial of curse-canceller potion.
• It’s funny how this part of San Francisco looks exactly like Granville Island.
• Spin instructor Kelly: it’s Zelena! (I should have figured that out.)
• “Cycling monkeys”
• Emerald Acres Farm. No place like home.
• Baby Robin, is not a baby anymore. With her father’s aim. 🏹
• The symbol on the coin is the same one that bruiser had on his arm.
• Just a little bit of emerald on Zelena’s earrings.
• Roni’s shirt today is a classic Ramones design.
• Why has Rumple reverted to troll version?
• Alice will lose…who? I’m getting lost in the relationships again.
• “I was cursed! To be a hippie!!”
• This looks like the Author’s pen test.
• Heroes! Of course, Zelena has been Team Hero for a while now but it’s great to hear her way it.
• Oh uh, hey Tiger Lily, nice to see you.
• A tiny little axe is going to have a hard time with a big old magical tree.
• Oh, this is the bit we saw from the end of season six.
• Do we get to see the other witches?
• Drizella is monologuing. Even though she said she wouldn’t.
• Regina doing the force-choke move here.
• Ooh. This is the trap. If the curse is broken, Henry dies from the poison.
• “You need to calm down.”
• Oh dang! She knocked Gothel entirely out. But IvyDrizella tricks her. Of course.
• I wonder if Regina left herself a back door in the curse. She’s cast it so many times, she might be able to slip in a little something extra without Drizella noticing.
• Alice and Robin!!
• Where is Robin in the cursed land? We haven’t seen her yet. Have we?
• Huh. Didn’t work. Too easy.
• Oops, Drizella was out-evilled. Now Anastasia has all of Drizella’s magic plus her own. But Gothel needs to convince her to use it, right?
